Tavares’ Arsenal transfer wish ruined after being kicked from training

Arsenal boss Arteta backs Saka to deal with hype

Marseille have reportedly decided against offering Nuno Tavares a permanent contract at the club once his loan expires this summer. The 22-year-old is set for a return to Arsenal, where he may not have a future either after claims of a recent training ground spat.

Tavares underwhelmed in his first season in England after Mikel Arteta sanctioned a £7million deal to sign him from Benfica in 2021.

And he slipped to third in the Spaniard’s pecking order upon the arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko in July, who has shared left-back duty with Kieran Tierney this term.

The switch to Marseille has offered him the chance of regular minutes, making 33 appearances for the French outfit, six of which came in the Champions League.

But recent reports across the Channel have left a black mark on his loan spell, which likely wouldn’t have gone down well in north London.

According to L’Equipe, Marseille manager Igor Tudor kicked Tavares out of a training session due to his attitude.

And the Croat boss told the media after that he had indeed banished a player from his session for showing a lack of effort.

Now, Foot-Sur7 report that Marseille don’t plan on pursuing a permanent deal for Tavares this summer, despite his prominent role on loan.

Whether the training incident has contributed to the decision remains to be seen, but it has thrown his career into limbo.

Arteta has proven that he will not stand for ‘bad eggs’ at the Emirates Stadium. Mesut Ozil, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette will have learned that much first-hand.

Will he want a potentially disruptive presence returning to his current Premier League title-challenging squad? Unlikely.

With Takehiro Tomiyasu also capable of filling in at left-back, the Gunners could look to cash in on Tavares this summer to bolster Arteta’s transfer kitty.

He will likely be active again ahead of the club’s impending return to the Champions League after a lengthy hiatus.

And Tavares previously confirmed that he has no intention to stick around at Arsenal makes a parting of ways all the more inevitable. The Portugal U21 international may have seen his future at Marseille, though.
