Tammy Abraham told Chelsea players about Arsenal aim before Roma transfer
Tammy Abraham told Chelsea’s players that he wanted to join Arsenal before agreeing a move to Roma, according to reports.
Chelsea have been open to selling Abraham since the start of the window and the striker has attracted interest from West Ham, Aston Villa and Arsenal.
However, the Gunners have been unable to match Chelsea’s £40m valuation and a move for Abraham hinged on their ability to offload either Alexandre Lacazette or Eddie Nketiah.
Arsenal have now appeared to lost out in the race for Abraham as Roma have agreed a €40 million (£34m) deal with Chelsea.
According to The Athletic, Jose Mourinho has personally spoken to Abraham in order to persuade him to make the move to Roma.
And Mourinho’s efforts have come after Abraham had told his Chelsea teammates that his preference was to join Arsenal this summer.
Abraham failed to secure a regular role at Chelsea following Thomas Tuchel’s arrival at Stamford Bridge in January.
And the 23-year-old’s chances have been hindered even further following Chelsea’s decision to re-sign Romelu Lukaku in a £97.5m deal from Inter earlier this week.
Abraham was an unused substitute for Chelsea’s 3-0 win against Crystal Palace in their Premier League opener on Saturday.
And speaking before the match, Tuchel indicated that the England international is likely to be leaving Chelsea before the end of the window.
‘There are always possibilities that players leave us, especially in the same position,’ said Tuchel.
‘The situation for Tammy is clear, it has been discussed. At the moment there is no news. We have a good relationship.
