Tammy Abraham ‘called up to England squad’ after sizzling start to life at Roma

Tammy Abraham has reportedly been handed a call-up to the England squad for the upcoming internationals following his impressive form for Roma.

Abraham has had a fantastic start to life in Italy and has already scored four times and provided two assists for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Although Abraham was not one of the names included in Gareth Southgate’s squad last Thursday, it looks as if the situation has now changed.

According to The Athletic, Southgate has called Abraham into the squad in what will be the first time the 24-year-old has been involved in the international fold in almost a year.

The same report says Abraham is not set to replace anyone already in the squad but will instead provide another option in attack for England.

Abraham joined Roma from Chelsea in the summer for £34million and has already established himself as the first-choice forward at the club.

The Roma forward produced another impressive display on Sunday as his side beat Empoli 2-0 in Serie A.

Abraham’s late call-up comes as a surprise given that Southgate said last week that it was ‘quite early stages’ for the forward.

“Tammy has started well. It's quite early stages,” he said.

“I have exchanged messages with Jose just to keep a track on that. He's another player who we know has been with us before.

“We are probably only talking about six or seven English strikers, really, that are either playing in the Premier League or, as Tammy is, playing in one of the big European leagues.

“So it's not a huge pool to cover at the moment. We will keep monitoring those guys really closely.”

Mourinho’s side are currently fourth in Serie A, six points behind leaders Napoli, who still have a 100% record this season.

England will face Andorra on Saturday before hosting Hungary at Wembley Stadium the following Tuesday.
