Takehiro Tomiyasu is set to complete a move to Arsenal on deadline day with terms agreed on a reported £17.2million transfer. The versatile defender had previously been linked with a move to Tottenham earlier in the transfer window.
Nuno Espirito Santo was keen to bolster his options at right back and Tomiyasu’s ability to play on the flanks and in central defence was seen as a huge bonus.
But reports soon went cold on Tottenham’s interest in the Japan international with Bologna looking for a deal worth £17m.
Spurs have now switched their attention to Emerson Royal, which has seemingly opened the door for Arsenal to swoop in for Tomiyasu.
The links with Tomiyasu and Arsenal emerged on deadline day and discussions appeared to move quickly with a deal now said to be agreed.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal will pay £17.2m for the Japanese defender, plus £2.6m in add-ons.
Personal terms are said to be agreed with a medical taking place in Italy later today.
He’s likely to come in as Arsenal’s first-choice right-back with Hector Bellerin set to leave for Real Betis.
The Spaniard has fallen out of favour under Mikel Arteta and the Gunners boss has struggled to find the perfect replacement.
Cedric Soares and Calum Chambers have featured on the right side of defence, but neither of them have been able to convince Arteta.
But Edu is set for a busy day negotiating deals for players to leave Arsenal in the final hours of the transfer market.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ future remains up in the air and he has reportedly been sent to train with the reserves following his outburst on Monday.
The versatile midfielder took to Instagram to post his frustration at not sealing a move away from the Emirates amid interest from Everton.
The Toffees have offered to sign Maitland-Niles on loan, but Arsenal supposedly want to keep the 24-year-old.
