Manchester United are set to miss out on a Europa League spot in this season’s Premier League, according to the latest figures from a supercomputer predicting the final standings. With nearly a quarter of the season having already been played, the table is starting to take shape with Manchester City and Arsenal leading the way at the top.

Leicester remain rooted to the bottom of the table heading into their match against Nottingham Forest on Monday. Tottenham and Liverpool both suffered disappointing results at the weekend in their bid to keep up with those leading the way.

Chelsea left it late to grab all three points in Graham Potter’s first league game in charge of the Blues against Crystal Palace. There were also strong wins for Newcastle, Everton and West Ham with two goalless draws between Bournemouth and Brentford as well as Leeds and Aston Villa.

But City’s demolition of arch-rivals United, with both Erling Haaland and Phil Foden bagging hat-tricks, was the biggest talking point of the weekend. United missed out on a chance to climb back into the top four and have already lost three of their opening seven league games.

And the latest supercomputer predictions for the final Premier League standings have United now finishing seventh this year. According to figures from FiveThirtyEight, United will finish on 61 points – level with Brighton – but will have a worse goal difference.

Prior to the defeat against City, United were predicted to finish sixth, one point ahead of Brighton. The south coast side’s movement likely has something to do with their impressive point away to Liverpool on Saturday.

Brighton were playing their first league game since Roberto De Zerbi came in to replace Potter and were fully deserving of their point against Jurgen Klopp’s side. Meanwhile, City are expected to win the Premier League title with ease with a 15-point gap to second place.

Arsenal and Liverpool are predicted to be in a close battle for second while Tottenham are backed to pip Chelsea for the final top four spot.
