Suarez explains why he enjoyed sharing Liverpool dressing room with Skrtel
Former Liverpool hitman Luis Suarez has named Martin Skrtel as one of the Reds’ stars he enjoyed sharing a dressing room with most.
Suarez will return to Anfield to face his former employers in the second Champions League group meeting between Jurgen Klopp’s side and Atletico Madrid.
He was surprisingly omitted from the starting eleven in the contest at the Wanda Metropolitano, in which the Reds overcame Diego Simeone’s side 3-2 in a fiercely dramatic contest.
Suarez became one of the best players in world football at Liverpool, particularly in his final season where he netted 31 goals and 17 assists in 33 Premier League appearances.
He went on to seal a £73m move to Barcelona after three seasons at Anfield, however, he looks back on his time at the club with great fondness.
“Despite Fernando Torres leaving at that time, and while it would have been amazing to play with him, just to be sharing a dressing room with players like [Steven] Gerrard, Martin Skrtel, Danny Agger, Pepe Reina, and Jamie Carragher – club legends who achieved great things – was unbelievable for me,” Suarez said to UEFA.com before their Atletico Madrid's huge clash at Anfield.
Skrtel spent eight seasons at the club, making 320 appearances at the heart of the Reds’ defence.
He was a key part of Brendan Rodgers’ side which came within a whisker of winning their first Premier League title in 2014.
While the Estonian defender will always be considered as a player who performed well in Merseyside, his only major honour at the club was a League Cup title in 2012.

However, Suarez feels the defender was one of the key elements to the Liverpool dressing room.
Two seasons after the Uruguayan striker left for the Nou Camp, Skrtel was sold to Turkish giants Fenerbahce in a deal worth around £5m.
After spells at Atalanta and Istanbul Basaksehir, he now resides at Slovenian first division side Spartak Trnava.
