Struggling Man Utd coach Michael Carrick backed to be next Rangers manager
Manchester United coach Michael Carrick has what it takes to be the next Rangers manager, according to former Scotland international Charlie Adam.
Following Steven Gerrard's departure to Aston Villa this week, Rangers are in the market for a new manager and reports suggest that Giovanni van Bronckhorst is favourite for the job.
The likes of John Terry and Gennaro Gattuso have also been linked with a move to Ibrox but Adams thinks his former club should take a punt on Carrick instead.
"I’ll throw a name in the hat. Michael Carrick – he has been at Man United, a big club, good coach. It was a gamble with Steven," Adam told BBC Sportsound.
"Will they go down that same route? Will they go for an experienced name? There will only be three or four people that know."
Carrick agreed to join United's first-team coaching staff in January 2018 and played his last game for the club in May of that year before officially hanging up his boots.
Since 2019 he has been a central part of United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's coaching staff, alongside assistant manager Mike Phelan.
The coaching staff, along with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, have regularly been criticised this season amid more struggles for Manchester United.
While he has no prior managerial experience, Carrick is arguably just as qualified for the Rangers job as Gerrard was three years ago – as Adam pointed out.

The former Liverpool skipper had only spent a year in charge of the Reds' under 17 side before the Glasgow club came calling.
Gerrard has left the Gers in a healthy position. They're currently four points clear of rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premier League and are still in with a chance of getting out of their Europa League group.
Adam, who played alongside Gerrard for a year at Anfield, currently plies his trade at Dundee FC.
He also had spells with Rangers, Blackpool and Stoke City.
Carrick meanwhile broke through as a player at West Ham United in 1999 before sealing a move to Tottenham Hotspur in 2004.
He spent two years in north London before Sir Alex Ferguson and United came calling and left for Old Trafford in a £18m deal.
Carrick would go on to make over 450 appearances for United, winning five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, two League Cups and the Europa League.
He is United's 16th most capped player of all time.
