Struggling Harry Maguire ‘booed’ by England fans after name read out at Wembley

Harry Maguire was loudly booed by England fans after his name was read out at Wembley.

England were gearing up for their Nations League match against Germany on Monday night when the team line-up was announced 45 minutes before kick-off. Maguire kept his place in the team after Friday’s 1-0 defeat to Italy despite facing huge criticism over the past year and recently losing his place in Manchester United’s starting eleven.

But despite the faith placed in him by England boss Gareth Southgate, his name was met with mass boos. And to prove it was no coincidence, the centre-back was jeered once more 20 minutes later when his name was read out again. Though Three Lions fans were heard singing his name during the first half.

Maguire played the full 90 minutes at the San Siro last week as England were relegated from Nations League A following another dismal display. While the former United captain was not to blame for Italy’s winner, fans flocked to social media to take aim at Southgate’s decision to play him in a three man defence.

The defender was similarly booed by his own supporters when England beat Ivory Coast 3-0 back in March. But despite all the abuse, Maguire insists he pays his critics no mind and is focused on returning to his best ahead of England’s World Cup campaign in November.

He recently told talkSPORT: “I am all good, ready to play, I feel fit and fresh. On my form, I don't know what has been said, I don't really read about it.

“I came off the back of three positive games with England in the summer, and a good pre-season. I felt really good. Obviously, the manager decided to leave me out for a game, and the team have been winning since.

“I am working hard on the training pitch to make sure I am ready for when my opportunity comes. That is all that I can do to try and help the team. I am not concentrating on anybody else and what people are saying.”
