Steven Gerrard is ‘ready’ to succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager according to club legend John Arne Riise.
Riise has dismissed claims that Gerrard is ‘too young’ and ‘too inexperienced’ for the role by saying the Rangers boss would ‘be ready for anything that comes to him’ because of his impressive work ethic.
The former left-back did, however, say that Klopp’s future at the club remains in his own hands despite Liverpool’s monumental downfall this season and that Gerrard would not be drafted in until the German ‘decides to stop managing’.
Steven Gerrard is ‘ready’ to succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool boss say John Arne Riise
Speaking of Gerrard’s suitability for the role, Riise told The Mirror: ‘Obviously he won the league on Sunday, Stevie, which is a massive achievement for him and his team.
‘I always knew he was going to be a success because he is a hard-working person, not just on the pitch but as a manager. I’m very happy for him.
‘People are saying “He doesn’t have the experience yet, he’s young”. One thing I know about Steven Gerrard: he’s always going to be ready for anything that comes to him, because he’s that type of person.
‘So I think that when Klopp decides to stop managing Liverpool – I think Klopp is the one to decide if he keeps going or not, he’s never going to get sacked, he’ll get an agreement to go when he doesn’t see a future there – when he goes if it’s one, two, three, four years, I think Stevie’s going to be the next man.’

However, Riise insists Klopp’s future at Liverpool remains in his own hands despite their form
Gerrard took charge of Rangers in 2018 with Celtic already seven-times champions and his inherited side unable to finish third in the table.
However, the former Liverpool player has taken Rangers to new heights, claiming their first Scottish Premier League title in 10 years.
Despite leading the Reds to their Premier League triumph last season, Klopp has not experienced the same fortune during the 2020-2021 campaign.
Rangers’ title triumph coincided with Liverpool’s sixth straight home defeat. Liverpool have subsequently have slipped to eighth in the table – leaving not only their title defence in tatters but also their hopes of making top four.
Their poor form as also seen them register the worst home record in England’s top four tiers this calendar year – having only claimed one point from their seven games at Anfield in 2021.
Klopp has been linked the Germany job after Joachim Low announced that he will step down
As a result, Gerrard has been touted to take over from the 53-year-old as the Liverpool boss.
Although, given both Klopp and Gerrard’s contracts expire in 2024, it seems unlikely that Gerrard will be back in the Anfield dressing rooms any time soon.
However, given the news that Germany manager Joachim Low will step down after this summer’s Euros many believe Klopp could choose to take on the national team role instead.
