Newcastle United are set to accelerate their search for a new manager this week – with former Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard and Arsenal flop Unai Emery both in the running to succeed Steve Bruce. The current Toon boss is doomed after overseeing Sunday’s 3-2 defeat against Tottenham.
There was an expectation that Newcastle would have a new boss in place for the visit of Spurs after their £305million takeover was completed earlier this month.
But Bruce was given a brief reprieve – with Sunday’s game marking his 1000th as a manager. Unfortunately, it was marred by a miserable result with fans calling for his dismissal as the atmosphere turned toxic.

It’s unlikely that he’ll clock up any more games in the hot seat at St James Park, with the club’s new hierarchy preparing to step up their search for a new boss this week.
The Times reports Gerrard and Emery are on a three-man shortlist to replace Bruce along with Belgium boss Roberto Martinez.
The ex-Everton chief is in the final 12 months of his deal with Belgium and has worked with current Newcastle assistant coach Graeme Jones before.

But with compensation unlikely to be an issue for Newcastle’s new owners, they could set their sights on Gerrard or Emery.
The pair have both tasted silverware with their respective clubs recently – something that’s not lost on the new Toon hierarchy, who recognise that trophies are desperately craved by their fanbase above all else after an agonising barren run.
Emery’s spell with Arsenal didn’t go as planned, but Arsene Wenger was always going to be a tough act to follow at the Emirates.
More recently, Emery tactically outwitted Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the Europa League final last May.

Although he may lack the Premier League management experience that the other candidates on the shortlist possess, Gerrard is no stranger to the English top flight.
After establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s greatest ever players, Gerrard has forged himself a burgeoning reputation with Rangers.
Gerrard helped end Celtic’s dominance of the SPL by halting their staggering run of nine successive league titles last season in spectacular fashion. And that has seen him garner support at boardroom level to get the nod for the Toon job.
Interestingly, Gerrard stopped short of ruling himself out of the running when commenting on Newcastle’s takeover last week.
“I think it’s interesting what’s happening at Newcastle,” he said. “I think if anyone deserves a break it’s the Geordie fans.”
