Newcastle’s hunt for a potential new manager continues to rage on, with Steve Bruce expected to leave the managerial hot-seat in the very near future. And Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has refused to rule himself out of the job, calling the proposition ‘interesting’.
A Saudi-backed consortium took over Newcastle last week, with the club becoming the richest in the Premier League as a result.
Fans of the Magpies have long yearned for success, with the club having desperately struggled under Mike Ashley’s tepid 14-year ownership, twice suffering relegation.
Yet if they are to progress, the board are expected to sack Bruce with the Newcastle-born manager’s side languishing in the relegation zone and without a win in seven games.
With Gerrard reportedly in the hat for the job, the Liverpool legend was asked whether or not he would be interested in a move to St James’ Park should an offer be made to him.
And he refused to rule himself out of proceedings, saying: “I think it’s interesting, what’s happening at Newcastle.
“I think if anyone deserves a break it’s the Geordie fans, so I’m sure that excitement levels are very high down on the Toon.
“And obviously everyone connected with the game is looking in with interest, to see how that develops.
“But from a personal point of view, I don’t really get involved in speculation. And I wish Steve Bruce all the best.”
Gerrard has been a revelation at Rangers, qualifying for the Europa League group stages regularly and most importantly winning the league after a nine-year consecutive spell by bitter rivals Celtic.
The Gers boss even went unbeaten in their title-winning season and as such is expected to be a frontrunner for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool job when the German departs in 2024 at the end of his contract.
Gerrard does feel sympathy for Bruce with the way that speculation has clouded his job at Newcastle, however.
He continued: “I don’t really react or get involved in any kind of speculation, especially when there’s someone who I have the utmost respect for sitting in that job.
“Sitting in these positions, you know, I wouldn’t like people to be speculating about my job.

“For me, I am in a very big job and a very big role here which I am very much fully focused on.
“We’ve got a top of the table clash at the weekend and it’s a game I am very much looking forward to.
“I’ve certainly got one eye on Newcastle in terms of Brucey getting his 1,000th game. He’s a great character of the game, he’s someone who I have a personal relationship with and I have the utmost respect for him.”
Newcastle take on Tottenham on Sunday in their first match since their Saudi-backed takeover.
