Steve Bruce’s first words following Newcastle exit as he addresses fans
Steve Bruce has expressed his gratitude for the “incredible support” he received at Newcastle United after being sacked by the club.
Bruce was always expected to be moved on after a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund took over from Mike Ashley on October 7.
He took charge of his 1,000th game in management on Sunday, but the Magpies’ 3-2 defeat by Tottenham only confirmed the inevitable.
Newcastle announced on Wednesday morning that the club had parted company with Bruce by mutual consent.
The statement expressed thanks to Bruce, who guided Newcastle to 13th and 12th-placed finishes in the Premier League during his two-year tenure.
Bruce has long been unpopular with Newcastle fans, who have been uninspired by his approach to games, but the 60-year-old paid tribute to the supporters in his parting statement.
"I am grateful to everyone connected with Newcastle United for the opportunity to manage this unique football club,” Bruce said.
"I would like to thank my coaching team, the players and the support staff in particular for all their hard work.

Bruce is hugely experienced, having previously taken charge of Sheffield United, Huddersfield, Wigan Athletic, Crystal Palace, Birmingham City, Sunderland, Hull City, Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday.
