'Steady Eddie' – Graeme Souness doubles down on criticism of Man Utd star
Graeme Souness has once again labelled Manchester United star Casemiro a ‘Steady Eddie’ despite a terrific first season at Old Trafford.
Casemiro joined United from Real Madrid last summer and has become a crucial player for Erik ten Hag, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s best defensive midfielders.
Though he came under fire for picking up numerous red cards and suspensions, his efforts helped the Red Devils finish third in the league, win the Carabao Cup and reach the FA Cup final.
The Brazil international was very highly-rated and had won countless trophies in Madrid before arriving in Manchester, but at the start of the season Souness wasn’t convinced he could aid United’s cause.
Last August, the Liverpool legend said: ‘The Real Madrid and that midfield, in particular, was full of footballing types. I see him as being a “Steady Eddie”.
‘I don’t think he’s got any great range of passing, I don’t think he’s going to make other people play. Maybe he’ll prove me wrong but I’ve not seen him ping it all over the place.
‘I never think “I’m really excited to watch Casemiro”. I think he’ll make them [United] more solid when he’s on the ball because he senses danger and is experienced.
‘He is 30-years-old, it’s £60million with add-ons, it’s too much money. It’s Man United all over again, Man United will pay a premium for players.’
One would have thought that Souness’ opinion would have changed following Casemiro’s great maiden year in England, where he registered seven goals and six assists in 51 appearances.
But that does not appear to be the case as the Scotland legend doubled down on his previous comments while taking donations for the Debra charity following his swim of the English Channel.
A United fan rang into talkSPORT and said: ‘I will immediately donate £20 right now if you, on air, go back on your “Steady Eddie” comment on Casemiro.’
‘No, no. I still believe that. I would be happy to be called a Steady Eddie,’ Souness replied.
‘Someone that is a seven-and-a-half out of 10 every week. I don’t think he is spectacular. I still stand by that and I don’t think I am wrong on that. He is a good player but you would never describe him as a great player.’
