Spurs star hits back after Premier League rivals mock him over goal celebrations

Tottenham’s Richarlison has responded to comments from Newcastle and West Ham stars where they joked about his goal celebrations.

It’s fair to say Richarlison’s first season with Spurs following his £60million move from Everton did not go to plan at all, with just three goals scored in 35 appearances, with just one coming in the Premier League.

Injury problems meant the forward struggled to establish himself in the starting XI and given the fee and hype around the move, Richarlison has frequently been labelled as one of the worst transfers of the season.

Furthermore, he has been the subject of much mockery after taking his shirt to wildly celebrate scoring three goals during the season – only for all of them to be disallowed by VAR for offside.

Callum Wilson and Michael Antonio were among those to do so whilst speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, though the latter later claimed his comments were just ‘banter’.

‘Players have banter with players. We have not said Richarlison is not a good footballer or anything about his stats,’ the Irons forward told the BBC.

‘He doesn’t actually care. If he cared, he would not be the quality of player he is – because you can’t let people get into your heads.

‘If he saw the comments, he would not have thought we were taking the mick out of him. He will know it’s banter.’

Well Richarlison has seen what was said and appears less than impressed, posting a comment on a Tik Tok clip of the podcast.

‘How many goals do both have in the World Cup?’ the Brazil international asked.

Richarlison scored found the back of the net three times in Qatar last December, with his scissor kick strike against Serbia winning the goal of the tournament award.

Wilson was included in England’s squad for the last World Cup but is yet to score again for his country since his debut goal back in 2018.

Antonio meanwhile was never capped by the Three Lions and switched allegiance to Jamaica in 2021 but was unable to help them qualify for the World Cup.

The pair certainly enjoyed better club seasons than Richarlison though, scoring 32 goals between them as Newcastle qualified for the Champions League, while West Ham have reached the Europa Conference League final.

Tottenham meanwhile failed to qualify for European football for the first time since 2009.
