Spurs made ‘dizzying’ offer to Julen Lopetegui as search for manager rumbles on
Tottenham’s long, drawn-out search for their new head coach has now entered its third month and Sevilla president Jose Castro claimed that they even contacted Julen Lopetegui.
Since sacking Jose Mourinho, Spurs have had interest in coaches like Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and most recently, Gennaro Gattuso, but talks have often broken down over disagreements.
They have already brought in a Director of Football in the form of Fabio Paratici, but the head coach role is still vacant.
Now, Castro has said that they made a ‘dizzying’ offer for the former Spain and Real Madrid head coach.
Speaking to Cadena SER: “Julen rang me and told me. He said he'd received offers he'd not listened to in addition to a dizzying one from Tottenham.
“But he said he doesn't forget things and that he is very motivated here.
“We believed and believe in him, giving him a two-year contract extension, and I'm sure he will bring much more to the club.
“You see his ability and leadership every day.
“Some coaches are more driven by economic factors but Julen is very clear that he is happy here and he even said it would be very difficult to find a better place to work than here.”
Lopetegui has enjoyed a successful stint at Sevilla, winning the Europa League in his first season in 2019-20 before leading them to the top four the following campaign.
Tottenham are set to return to pre-season training early next month and hope to appoint a head coach by then as they look to make a return to the Champions League.
Would Julen Lopetegui have been a good appointment for Tottenham? Let us know in the comments below.
Last season was difficult for them, as they fell away from the top spots after Christmas, ending up in seventh, qualifying for the Europa Conference League, sacking Jose Mourinho and losing the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City.
Earlier in the summer, star forward Harry Kane also reportedly wanted to leave as he looked to back up his talent with collective trophies.
In their search, Conte couldn’t find an agreement with Spurs, Pochettino proved to be too pricey to get from Paris Saint-Germain while other such as Leicester City’s Brendan Rodgers, Ajax’s Erik ten Hag and soon-to-be Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann have been unreasonable targets.
