Spurs fans crease as Perisic sends Arsenal’s Tomiyasu ‘for hot dog’ at World Cup

Tottenham Hotspur fans were delighted to see Ivan Perisic send Arsenal's Takehiro Tomiyasu "for a hot dog" at the World Cup.

The two Premier League stars faced off down the flank as Croatia took on Japan in the round of 16 on Monday afternoon, with Perisic playing on the left wing against right back Tomiyasu. A bright start for the Spurs man saw him give Tomiyasu plenty of problems during the first half, dribbling past him several times.

One error from the Japan defender had supporters raving on social media as his slip allowed Perisic in on goal before his shot was saved by Shuichi Gonda.

Following the incident, one Spurs fan tweeted: “Perisic sent Tomiyasu for hotdog.” Another added: “Wow that’s an error that Perisic should’ve capitalised on. Tomiyasu with a horrendous giveaway.”

A third supporter also wrote: “Great pressing from Perisic there, not sure what Tomiyasu was trying to do. Unlucky in the end, he would have hoped for an option in the box. Was always going to be difficult to score from there.”

One more fan commented: “Tottenham on Arsenal crime there, as Ivan Perisic gets a bad mistake from Takehiro Tomiyasu, Japan fortunate there.” Another went on to add: “Tomiyasu made mouth about not letting Perisic score & he almost let him score from a terrible mistake.”

Tomiyasu was making his first start of the tournament after a pair of substitute appearances during the group stage. He has also made 18 appearances for the Gunners this season, having joined the club from Bologna last summer.

Despite Perisic having the upper hand in his duel with Tomiyasu, he was unable to put his side in front, with Japan taking the lead on the stroke of half-time.

A well-worked corner routine resulted in Celtic forward Daizen Maeda prodding the ball home from close range as Japan went in search of another shock win.

Perisic did find the back of the net 10 minutes into the second half, though, as he was left unmarked to head Dejan Lovren's cross into the bottom corner.

The Samurai Blue came from behind beat both Germany and Spain to top their group and set up their clash with Croatia. A quarter-final match-up with either Brazil or South Korea awaits the winner of Monday's match.
