In case you missed Saturday night’s game, England have been eliminated from the World Cup at the quarter-final stage.

While 23 million people watched the game on TV, the news did not reach Tottenham Hotspur’s marketing team, who sent out emails on Sunday inviting fans to watch England’s semi-final at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The automated gaffe is an ironic blunder, as Spurs’ striker Harry Kane missed a chance to draw England level in the closing minutes of the match at the Al Bayt Stadium.

Tottenham’s automated email invited fans to join them for England’s World Cup semi-final

But Harry Kane’s Three Lions were on the wrong side of a 2-1 defeat to France on Saturday

In an email with the heading ‘A world class venue for World Cup screenings’, it goes on to invite fans to ‘Watch England in the World Cup Semi Final at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’.

Furthermore, it goes into detail by asking if England could make the final – which is at odds with the experience of Saturday’s World Cup exit. The email read: ‘Experience the excitement and drama of a World Cup Semi-final at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium!

‘With a place in the Final at stake, England’s date with destiny awaits on Wednesday 14th December, 7 pm KO. Will Gareth Southgate’s men make it to a first World Cup Final since 1966?

‘Speak to a member of our events team to book yourself a space.’

Wednesday’s semi-final will have Spurs involvement in the form of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris

Whilst excitement and drama are likely for both semi-finals, unfortunately neither will include Gareth Southgate’s England in 2022.

Instead, France will take on Morocco in the second of the two semis on Wednesday, 24 hours after Croatia take on Argentina.

There will be Tottenham representation in both semi-finals. Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was between the sticks for France on Saturday. While he was unable to keep out Kane’s first penalty, he was not required to deal with the England captain’s second one, which flew over the bar.

Spurs defenders Ivan Perisic and Cristian Romero are on opposing sides for Tuesday’s semi

Meanwhile, Croatian defender Ivan Perisic and Argentine counterpart Cristian Romero will square-off in the opening semi-final at the Lusail Stadium on Tuesday.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been used for events including boxing and concerts, and would understandably have been excited about the prospect of hosting a party to celebrate England’s second consecutive semi-final appearance.

It is also a home for NFL games in London every autumn – which would have seen Kane’s side awarded three points for a field goal.
