The Spanish media hardly praised Real Madrid after their emphatic 6-2 win on aggregate over Liverpool in the Champions League Round of 16. Los Blancos were victorious in both legs in a defeat that indicated just how quickly Jurgen Klopp’s side are regressing.

After coming from two goals down to win 5-2 at Anfield, Madrid heaped further misery on the Reds at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday. Karim Benzema scored the all-important goal in a 1-0 win on the night, tapping home from close range after Vinicius Jr managed to steer the ball in his direction.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side were composed throughout the second leg and complacency never looked to have slipped into their thoughts, meanwhile, Liverpool struggled to truly gain the upper hand over their opponents for extended periods of the match.

Though the Spanish press were hardly taken back by the display over the two legs, with their coverage implying that Madrid went out and did what was expected of them rather than singing their praises for beating one of the most successful clubs in the competition.

Last season, Klopp’s side were battling it out in Paris for the Champions League trophy, though the Reds now look like they may not even qualify for the competition next season and need an emergency rebuild. The change has been so drastic that El Chiringuito journalist Cristobal Soria compared the Anfield outfit to Spanish minnows Getafe, who are 18th in the La Liga and in the heart of a relegation battle.

He said: “Getafe has nothing to envy to this Liverpool. Nothing to envy. Borja Mayoral is no worse than Diogo Jota. Enes Unal is no worse than Mohamed Salah.”

Liverpool are currently sixth in the Premier League and six points outside of the top four, with their recent 7-0 win over Manchester United only masking their woes for a matter of days. Defeat at the hands of Bournemouth and Madrid will only highlight just how far Klopp’s team have fallen, whilst also indicating that it is not the strength of the opposition that is causing Liverpool problems.

It remains to be seen how the Reds react in the summer transfer window and whether their owners, Fenway Sports Group, provide Klopp with the funds he needs to replace some of the veteran stars in his squad that are holding him back. If funds are not provided, it could be several seasons before Madrid and Liverpool face off again.
