Spanish press build-up Liverpool v Real Madrid 2018 final rematch

‘A duel of 19 champions’: Spanish press build-up to repeat of dramatic 2018 Champions League final as Liverpool look to avenge their defeat to Real Madrid after quarter-final draw

  • Liverpool will face Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League
  • The last time the sides faced was in the dramatic 2018 final which Madrid won
  • Jurgen Klopp’s side get the chance to avenge their 3-1 defeat in Kiev
  • Spanish press have headlined the clash as a ‘duel of 19 champions’

The morning newspapers in Spain have focused their attentions on the Champions League quarter-final draw, which saw 13-time winners Real Madrid put up against six-time winners Liverpool.

There is a lot of history between both sides in the Champions League, most recently in 2018 where Real Madrid clinched the trophy after a dramatic 3-1 victory.

The draw gives Liverpool the change to avenge the heartbreaking defeat nearly three years on, as they fight for a place in the semi-finals.

Spanish press have built up the mega quarter-final clash as a ‘duel of 19 champions’

Spanish newspaper AS has headlined the clash as a ‘duel of 19 champions’, featuring two of the most successful sides in the tournament’s history.

The winner of the tie will then go on to face either Chelsea or Porto in the semi-finals, but AS has skipped that stage and said that Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain are the most likely finalists for Zinedine Zidane’s side.

Marca ran with the headline ‘this team wants more’ using an image of the 2018 final, where Mo Salah sustained a shoulder injury in a challenge with Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos.

They say the 2018 final in Kiev is the ultimate scene setter for the quarter-final clash, although Los Blancos might not be able to play in Madrid due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Salah was taken off mid-way through the first-half of the 2018 final, in a game which unraveled for the Reds in spectacular style.

Goalkeeper Lloris Karius made two costly mistakes while Gareth Bale scored one of the greatest final goals of all time with his overhead kick.

Liverpool would make-up for the loss one year later, clinching the trophy for the sixth time after a 2-0 win over Tottenham.

Zinedine Zidane who managed the Spanish giants on that day, said Liverpool will ‘demand a lot’ from Real Madrid across the two legs.

In his press conference after the draw he said: ‘We know the difficulties of the game. At this level all the teams are very good and very difficult.

‘It will be a very demanding match too. Liverpool are physically going to demand a lot from us.

‘It will be a good match between two teams that have won many Champions. At that level, it is always very difficult to win.’

The first-leg currently scheduled to take place in Madrid takes place on April 6, with the second-leg at Anfield on April 14.
