‘Enrique’s idiotic decision! Fail coming big time’: Spanish football fans and pundits react with SHOCK after Sergio Ramos was left out of Spain’s squad for this year’s European Championships

  • Sergio Ramos was left out of Spain’s squad for the European Championships
  • The Spain captain was left out as no Real Madrid players were picked for Spain
  • Luis Enrique picked a 24-man squad even though he could name 26 players
  • Fans have reacted in shock on social media to the star defender being left out

Fans of the Spanish national team have slammed head coach Luis Enrique for dropping Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos from the country’s Euro 2020 squad.

The 35-year-old defender is Spain’s all-time record appearance holder with 180 caps but the national team captain has struggled with injury this season and has not even made a smaller 24-man squad named by Enrique on Monday.

Enrique picked Manchester City duo Aymeric Laporte and Eric Garcia despite playing second fiddle to John Stones and Ruben Dias for Pep Guardiola’s side, while Leeds’ Diego Llorente and Villarreal’s Pau Torres also made the squad.

The Spain manager had the option to bring 26 players to the tournament but named a smaller squad and still refused to take Ramos, leaving fans baffled on social media.

One fan tweeted: ‘No Ramos is appalling to me. Whether you think he deserves to play is up to discussion but NO ONE in that team can duplicate the role he takes on as a veteran and a captain. No one.’

Reacting to Ramos’ exile, another fan said: ‘Enrique’s idiotic decision!! Fail coming big time’

One fan tweeted: ‘No Ramos for Spain but they take Eric Garcia. What an absolute joke.’

Meanwhile, another shocked fan posted: ‘Sergio Ramos missing out for Spain is a shock. Sergio Ramos missing out and Luis Enrique only taking 24 players is just a kick in the balls.’

Former Barcelona manager Enrique’s squad also contains no Real Madrid players,  including the shock absence of Los Blancos star Nacho Fernandez, who kept 19 clean sheets for Zinedine Zidane’s squad this season.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker, who played for Barcelona in his playing days, tweeted his surprise at this news: ‘No Ramos in the Spain squad. In fact not a single Real Madrid player. That can’t have ever happened before. Extraordinary.’

Fans felt that Nacho deserved a place in the squad, especially over City centre-back Garcia who has played just six league games for the Premier League champions this season.

One Real Madrid fan tweeted: Lucho (Enrique) must be crazy for leaving out Nacho Fernandez after such a tremendous season he had. No justification whatsoever’

Another Real fan posted: @InfiniteMadrid I want them to lose now so bad..want them to get humiliated..wth no Nacho??’

Another fan said: ‘Eric Garcia and Diego Llorente over Nacho? Wallahi I will unleash my Spanish national team agenda at the upcoming Euro 2020, that Catalan fraud Lucho will pay for his crimes.’

Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague defended Enrique’s decision to not pick Ramos for the European Championships this summer, though the pundit claimed Spain will not be favourites to win the competition.

Balague tweeted: ‘No Sergio Ramos in the squad for Spain. Luis Enrique being Luis Enrique, always good news when the leader has got a very clear idea of where he wants to go and who with.

‘Don’t call them (Spain) favourites, lots of youth. But I bet we will have a lot of fun. And as only one nation will win, I ask my national team to entertain us In Luis Enrique we trust!’

Enrique himself faced questions as to why he did not pick Ramos despite naming a smaller squad, and claimed his injury problems played a role in his absence from the squad.

Enrique defended his choice to not pick Ramos in a pre-selection interview with reporters

The Spain manager told reporters on Monday: ‘I’d like to send message to Sergio Ramos, our captain, who is not on the list as he has not been able to compete since January in the right condition, or even train with group.

‘I told him by phone last night, it was difficult and tough, but it’s best for team.

‘My conversation with Sergio yesterday remains private, I won’t tell anyone. It was not easy to tell him something which was not positive for him, but I have to make decisions which I and my staff consider is best for the team.’

‘Any decision I made about Sergio Ramos would have been controversial. I know where I am, and accept there will be media noise.’
