Southgate explains why Foden is not in squad for Czech Republic clash

Gareth Southgate says he decided not to risk Phil Foden for England’s final Group D match with the Czech Republic at Euro 2020 as another yellow card would have seen the Manchester City star suspended for the last 16.

The England head coach has made four changes to his starting XI that was held to a goalless draw by Scotland last Friday, with Kyle Walker, Harry Maguire, Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka coming into the side at Wembley.

Tyrone Mings, Reece James, Mason Mount and Foden all drop out for the Three Lions, with the latter picking up a booking in England’s opening victory over Croatia.

And with Mount and Ben Chilwell currently isolating and potentially having to miss England’s upcoming round of 16 clash, Southgate decided to leave Foden out of his squad altogether so as not to risk another player being unavailable.

‘Frankly, I don’t understand it at all because there are teams flying around, by coach, for hours and our two boys have been pinged. I don’t get it. I really don’t get it.

‘I’ve no issue with Steve and Scotland but it just seems a bizarre situation.’
