Graeme Souness is adamant that Manchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer should have been sent off against Leicester.

Sabitzer caught Leicester defender Wout Faes in the first half at Old Trafford with what looked like a rash challenge.

However, the 28-year-old, who is on loan from Bayern Munich, didn’t receive a card.

Souness stressed that Sabitzer was intent on fouling his opponent.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Souness said: ‘I think this is a red card for several reasons. He’s on his heels when the ball breaks to him. He’s turned side onto it. If you’re going to do someone that’s how you do it. If he makes contact with the ball what’s he going to do with the ball? He’s looking for the player.

‘I don’t care what some referee who has never played the game has to say on that. That is a sending off. That is dangerous play. If that’s not dangerous play, what is? He’s turned side on, that’s a classic case of setting yourself up to do someone.’

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink added that he was surprised that Sabitzer didn’t at least receive a yellow card.

Hasselbaink said: ‘I’ve seen them been given. I was surprised nothing was done a yellow at least.’

Sabitzer was making his fourth appearance since joining United and relishes making challenges with regularity.

The Austria international will hope that his loan spell at United will be a successful one, with the club still involved in four competitions.

Next weekend Erik ten Hag’s side will face Newcastle in the final of the Carabao Cup, while they will play West Ham in the FA Cup fifth round on March 1. In addition, they are level at 2-2 with Barcelona going into the second of their Europa League last-16 tie.
