Son Heung-Min has backed Harry Kane to become the first player ever to retain the World Cup golden boot.

Kane claimed the prize during at the tournament in 2018, scoring six goals in Russia as Gareth Southgate led the Three Lions to their first World Cup semi-final since 1990.

However, despite drawing a blank in England’s win over Iran in their Group B opener, Son believes that the 29-year-old is capable of making history in Qatar.

Kane scored six times, all in the group stage, as England reached the semi-finals of the competition

Kane would become the first player ever to retain the prestigious accolade if he can replicate his goalscoring form in Qatar

‘Obviously, we’re good friends and I’ve spoken to him about what’s been going on – but I’ll keep that conversation to myself,’ the South Korea captained explained.

‘Of course, I’m hoping he’s okay. He should be at this tournament. He can show everyone he’s one of the best strikers in the world. I wish him all the best and I hope he wins the Golden Boot.’

Six players, including Kane’s England teammate Bukayo Saka, currently sit joint-top of the competition’s Golden Boot standings with two goals.

Despite notching a pair of assists in England’s opening group fixture, Kane failed to get on the scoresheet and suffered a knock as Gareth Southgate’s side got their World Cup campaign off to a winning start.

Meanwhile Son returned to action donning protective face wear in South Korea’s draw with Uruguay

However, the England talisman has returned to training ahead of the game against the USA and will look to add to his 51 international goals at the Al Bayt Stadium on Friday evening. 

Son meanwhile opened his tournament captaining South Korea in a 0-0 draw with Uruguay on Thursday.

The 30-year-old played wearing a protective mask after suffering a fracture to his orbital bone in Tottenham’s Champions League tie against Marseille earlier this month.

South Korea fans in attendance donned replica masks to pay tribute to their 30-year-old captain as he made his first appearance after undergoing surgery.
