Son Heung-min threw away his protective face mask in frustration after losing the ball during Tottenham’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa on New Year’s Day.

The Spurs winger underwent surgery after fracturing his eye socket against Marseille last month and nearly missed the World Cup as a result.

But Son was able to play a major role for South Korea in Qatar thanks to a protective face mask – which he wore throughout the tournament – prompting several fans to sport similar headwear from the stands in support of their national hero.

Early in the first half of Tottenham’s home clash against Villa on Sunday, Son picked up the ball in a dangerous position and was feebly stripped of possession by Leon Bailey.

The 30-year-old tracked back in recovery before doffing the headgear, throwing it towards the touchline in frustration.

Son, who played out the remainder of the first half without his face mask, failed to earn Tottenham a lead at the break, overplaying a pass through to star forward Harry Kane in the closing stages.

Spurs endured a disappointing return in their first match back after the World Cup as they drew 2-2 at Brentford on Boxing Day, although Antonio Conte’s side did well to recover from a two goal deficit and salvage a point.

The missed opportunity allowed Manchester United to usurp Spurs’ place in the top four with a 1-0 win against Wolves, courtesy of Marcus Rashford’s late strike.

Ahead of the clash with Villa, Tottenham had conceded first in each of their last nine matches, prompting Conte to ramp up the intensity of his drills in training.
