Solskjaer’s response to Marcus Rashford being ‘fed up’ and Ed Woodward’s fury
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's comments after Manchester United's goalless draw with Crystal Palace suggested he understands Ed Woodward's frustration.
But his comments perhaps overlook the suggestion his players aren't approaching games with the right attitude at the moment; the apparent reason for their sudden slump.
Solskjaer's United were cruising in the Premier League not too long ago and looked like genuine title contenders for the first time since 2013.
But an injury to Paul Pogba has put the brakes on the charge, with Manchester City now out of sight.
Following the Red Devils' 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Wednesday night, Solskjaer said: "Of course you are not happy if you don't create enough chances to win a game.
"It's been a week with no goals and sometimes three games without scoring sounds like a lot. It's a bit of a worry but because we play every few days I know the boys are giving everything.
"Attitude and approach I'm very happy with but the quality we need to get back to what we know we can do.
"The tempo was missing, once in a while, it happens. It wasn't one of our best nights, that's for sure.
"Roy Hodgson always sets his teams up to be really hard to play against and it just showed again tonight. We just have to find a spark again, the quality again and try and win the games."
Solskjaer's comments speak to the frustration felt by United vice-chairman Woodward, who was seen smacking a vacant chair in anger just 10 minutes into the match at Selhurst Park.
United's poor distribution was the reason for his outburst, with Solskjaer admitting he's aware of United's "lack of tempo", and looking for a fix.
But Solskjaer's comments overlook the idea that the players aren't applying themselves in the same way they were a few weeks ago, which is why frustrations are apparent on matchday.
Marcus Rashford had a run-in with Harry Maguire during the goalless draw, with the United captain shouting at the England international.
Rashford responded: "What do you want me to do?" to which Maguire replied: "F*****g get back onside!"
Rashford appeared to then shout back to Maguire: "Shut the f*** up, f****** k*******".
BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Pat Nevin reacted to Rashford's body language during the game, which Solskjaer's comments overlooked.
"Marcus Rashford's body language just doesn't look right. It's noticeable with somebody like him as he always has good body language, he's generally always up for it," he said.
"I don't know… is he a bit fed up being stuck on the left-wing? Does he want to play a bit more central? Who knows.
"Crystal Palace have looked the better side in this second half. Bruno Fernandes has had very little impact in this game. Marcus Rashford, exactly the same.
"It's been disappointing from United. There just hasn't been enough quality."
