Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was spotted giving Fred a huge thumbs up after he ignored Bruno Fernandes' advice and launched a long-range curler against Chelsea.
The Brazilian midfielder was inches from hitting the target as United tried to find a breakthrough during Sunday's 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge.
Spotting a chance to catch Edouard Mendy off guard, Fred unleashed a shot from outside the Chelsea penalty area that whistled narrowly wide of the woodwork.
Fred looked frustrated immediately after his miss, but his spirits were soon lifted by a huge smile and a round of applause from Solskjaer on the touchline.
The Red Devils boss was seen giving Fred a thumbs-up while laughing, which prompted a chuckle from the 27-year-old.
The two were no doubt laughing at the fact Fred had ignored advice from Fernandes, who recently told his team-mate not to shoot with his right foot.
The playmaker's plea came after a 0-0 draw with Arsenal in January, during which he fired well wide with his weaker foot.
Afterwards, Fred posted some pictures of the game on Instagram with the caption 'Always looking forward!'
Fernandes liked the post and commented in the pair's native Portuguese language.
He said: "Nao chuta mais de pe direito pff", adding a praying hands emoji.
Fernandes' plea roughly translates to: "Don't shoot with your right foot any more, please."
And it wasn't time he had given Fred advice on finding the net, having previously told him to get in the box before trying to hit the target.
Last season, while United were in a hotel preparing for a Europa League game against Club Brugge, the pair were watching videos of Red Devils legend Paul Scholes scoring goals.
Fred recalled: "I was like, 'man, this guy gets in the box so much. He’s a midfielder and is always in the box, he always scores with his head, all the time'.
"In Brazil I wasn’t able to watch all United games. And then, seeing his goals, he would enter the box, shoot from outside the box, right foot, left foot. And I said, 'man, this guy.'
"And then Bruno said, 'See? You have to do that. Enter the box and you’ll score'."
The pearl of wisdom seemed to have the desired effect, with Fred netting twice in the 5-0 win over Brugge.

But Solskjaer was clearly happy for Fred to ignore his team-mate against Chelsea on Saturday.
And some United fans were delighted with the manager's encouragement for his midfielder's audacious effort.
Responding to a clip of the incident that was posted on Reddit, one supporter said: "Thought it was the most wholesome moment in the match.
"Literally laughed out loud when that happened knowing bruno makes fun of fred for not scoring goals, it would be hilarious if he had scored that one!"

Another fan said: "Fred's gonna miss the next shot he takes and the one after that but if he gets the needed support he can start putting them into the net and hit a scoring streak and that's good for the club."
And one fan posted: "We know he has it in his locker from Shakhtar and he has not had the success so far, but he keeps getting into the position and they keep allowing him space, he absolutely must keep practicing and improving this so we can exploit it."
Fred will hope for another chance to lace up his shooting boots when United travel to face Crystal Palace in Wednesday's Premier League clash.
