Solskjaer identifies Man Utd’s "monster of a human being" after Watford win

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has labelled midfielder Scott McTominay a "monster of a human being" after the 24-year-old scored the only goal of the game in his side's 1-0 win over Watford in the FA Cup third round.

McTominay found the back of the net after just five minutes when he nodded home a corner from Alex Telles and Solskjaer was full of praise for him after the game.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Solskjaer said: "Scott has had a very good season. He is being more and more dangerous, we know he can be a box-to-box midfielder.

"He should have scored a few more on set-plays before now because he is a monster of a human being. I am very happy he got the goal."

The Scotland international was given the captain's armband and Solskjaer was also impressed with the way McTominay dealt with the extra responsibility.

"He did [deliver] he always does," Solskjaer told BT Sport. "He's a leader but I thought maybe today we give it to him to see how he reacts wearing the armband. He's always out there leading the way but brilliant today.

"We've always trusted our young men coming through and Scott is one of them that we really believe has got the DNA of Man United in him and he knows what it is to be a Man United player."

United legend Rio Ferdinand believes McTominay is now "someone I think Ole could build around", telling BT Sport: "You can see in the way he conducts himself but more importantly the way he plays out on the pitch he’s wholehearted.

"He covers the ground well, he takes responsibility in situations and you need all that as a captain. You need to be somebody who people can look at and he seems to have those sort of traits.

"He has the credentials to be a mainstay in this team and be an important member of this team for years and years to come because of the way he applies himself.

"It’s not just about footballing ability sometimes, there’s more to it than that, your mental capacity to take things on board but also the ability to accept responsibility and be the man that people look to for inspiration. He’s almost certainly now become one of the main players in that midfield area and he’s someone I think Ole could build around.

"He’s not the one who you’d say is the most imaginative or the person you’d say has got the most skills, but there’s other things that he brings to the game that other players don’t bring, that intensity, that work rate, the effort, and importantly the responsibility he takes on."
