The 28-year-old had a successful loan spell at West Ham last season but has played more minutes for England than United so far this term, making just one start and six appearances in total.
Solskjaer admits it is difficult to give all his squad the playing time they deserve, but has not given up hope of Lingard staying.
He said: ‘Jesse’s had a good start to the season, of course. He’s come on and scored a few goals and that’s been very important for us.
‘He knows what we want, we want to extend his contract. We see him as an important player for us.
‘It’s up to him maybe up to me to give him more playing time because he deserves to. Maybe me as well because every time I pick a team I have to leave someone out. Hopefully we get something sorted for Jesse because we really rate him.’
