Sol Campbell ‘wrote off £1.7million in wages’ to help save former club Pompey
Ex-England international Sol Campbell claims he wrote off £1.7million to help financially stricken Portsmouth with their money woes.
Campbell spent three years on the South Coast, leaving Pompey in 2009, just as their financial troubles started to plague the club. Portsmouth had been a mainstay in the Premier League but their collapse saw them crash all the way down to League Two.
And as Portsmouth's future as a football club was in doubt, Campbell decided to wave £1.67million – which he was owed by the club – due to outstanding bonuses and image rights, plus a claim of £200,000 in interest.

Campbell told Portsmouth News : "I didn’t get my money, I had to let it go. It was more than £1.6m; I was entitled to it, but I didn’t want to hamper Pompey moving forward.
"Another person could have said 'No, I want my money', but I didn’t. I’ve been very generous and perhaps people haven't appreciated that. Regardless of what might be said about me, I could have stuck to my guns and said 'I want my money' – I didn’t. No way.

"It was actually more bonuses than image rights, but when they said I couldn’t get it, fine, I’ll walk away. That was out of respect for a fantastic club like Pompey, it should be common knowledge."
Campbell also recently revealed he's still looking for jobs in football – with the Arsenal legend being left out of a job following his disastrous spell at Macclesfield.
Speaking candidly, Campbell revealed he feels "banished" from football, and he might have to look away from England if he hopes to land another role.
