- Users online ripped into Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano on Wednesday
- The defender was awarded a red card for fouling Man City striker Erling Haaland
- The linesman then flagged for offside, meaning the red card was rescinded
Social media users have described Dayot Upamecano as ‘unbelievably bad’ after he escaped a red card in Bayern Munich’s clash with Man City on Wednesday.
The France international was at centre-stage in the first-leg last week, where City ran riot and secured a 3-0 victory at the Etihad.
Upamecano had been singled out for numerous defensive mistakes in that match and fans in Germany would have been hoping for a different performance in the second-leg.
However, things nearly took a nightmare start for the defender after he was awarded a red card for a foul on Man City’s Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian striker raced through on goal and was brought down by Upamecano, and the referee immediately brandished a red card for the foul.

The referee brandished a red card to the defender before seeing that the linesman has raised his flag for offside already
Luckily for the Bayern defender, the linesman had raised his flag which meant that his offence was overturned and he was allowed to continue in the match.
However, that didn’t ensure that Upamecano escaped the wrath of social media and, shortly afterwards, a number of users online commented on the incident.
One user wrote: ‘Upamecano is saved from a straight red by inches, then concedes an incredibly harsh penalty and gets booked, but Haaland skies the penalty. Upamecano’s luck has been aggressively swinging between match saving & tie killing.’
‘Upamecano is going to wake up in cold sweats at night over this tie for the next decade,’ another said.
‘Dayot Upamecano is a lucky boy,’ one user remarked, while another said: ‘Someone measure Upamecano’s heart rate’.
There was a running theme in some comments, as one user said: ‘Upamecano literally couldn’t have done more to gift the tie to City if he tried. Unbelievably bad in both legs.’
Another then wrote: ‘Upamecano might have just had the worst two leg experience in recent UCL history.’

Haaland added a third for the hosts to give Bayern a mountain to climb in the second leg at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.
