Beloved football commentator Chris Kamara admitted doctors could have saved his speech had he gone to get himself checked earlier.

The Sky Sports presenter and pundit bravely opened up about his battle with Speech Apraxia, a rare neurological disorder which affects his ability to speak and do other things. While he does still appear on some television and radio shows, he is not as commonly seen on the airwaves as he used to be.

If he wasn’t already, Kamara has become an enormous inspiration ever since he decided to bravely speak out about his struggles. However, the 64-year-old also admitted he feels a tinge of guilt as his condition could have been spotted earlier.,

“The doctor said if I’d gone in those first two or three months and had my thyroid checked then I might have been OK,” he said to The Sun. "But because I left it, everything happening in the body — the balance, the muscle weakening — came from the fact I didn’t tell anybody.

“I feel I’ve let my wife and family down by being a dinosaur and not getting checked out.”

Kamara has also previously spoken about how he first noticed there was an issue in 2020 but chose not to act on it. And the beloved television personality, who also played for the likes of Portsmouth, Swindon Town, and Leeds United, admitted he regrets his decision to not see the doctor.

The ex-footballer said he would rarely speak at home, talking in 'sound bites' rather than starting full conversations and he would try to get away with giving limited answers.

He chose to walk away from Sky Sports 'before I ruined my legacy' though Kamara has gone on to present a number of different shows on television.

He added: “After 25 years of broadcasting I took my voice for granted and so when it sounds like somebody else or it’s slurring or not there at all, it’s not just embarrassing, it’s mind-blowing.”
