Sir Jim Ratcliffe uses ace card on Glazers with Man Utd takeover bid

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has told the Glazers they can remain on board at Manchester United as stakeholders if he were to purchase the club this summer, reports have claimed. The British billionaire remains in active talks with the Red Devils over a potential takeover and he is determined to successfully oust the Qataris by handing Avram and Joel Glazer the chance to maintain a substantial stake at Old Trafford as opposed to totally buying them out of Old Trafford.

Ratcliffe is among the frontrunners to purchase United but crucially, it appears he has now altered his strategy as the process now reaches a defining and crucial stage.

Last month, INEOS matched the world-record Qatari bid for United and Ratcliffe was even present at Old Trafford for talks ahead of the potential takeover.

Now The Times are reporting that Ratcliffe’s latest proposal would see him acquire a controlling stake at United worth more than 50 per cent.

Around 20 per cent would then remain in the hands of the Glazer family while the other 30 per cent would stay in the hands of respective investment groups.

INEOS have made it abundantly clear that they are only interested in acquiring a controlling stake meaning they will make all of the important decisions in the Old Trafford boardroom.

It’s understood United have set a loose deadline for Friday if any bidders wish to make any fresh proposals.

While the Glazers are interested to a full sale it’s believed they are also open to the idea of remaining stakeholders, as proposed by INEOS.

Last November, the Glazers confirmed they were ‘open to investment opportunities’ in their first initial statement – suggesting that a full sale was not necessarily a formality.

Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani is keen to completed a full takeover that will see him acquire full control of the club.

Meanwhile, rival bids from American investment firms involve minority stakes – meaning the Glazers are not short of options.

Supporters remain determined to drive the American family out of the club as they continue to heavily oppose the current regime in a desperate bid to oversee change this summer.

Ratcliffe’s biggest problem remains the lingering suggestion that the Qataris launch one final monstrous offer in an attempt to blow rivals out of the water.

The Glazers value United at around £6billion but it seems highly unlikely that any suitors will match that figure.

In a recent interview with the In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Ratcliffe made it clear he does not intend to overspend with any takeover bid.

He said: “How do you decide the price of a painting? How do you decide the price of a house? It’s not related to how much it cost to build or how much it cost to paint.

“What you don’t want to do is pay stupid prices for things because then you regret it subsequently.”
