Sir Alex Ferguson’s Man Utd XI from his final win and where they are now

In his final home outing as Manchester United manager, it was rather fitting that Sir Alex Ferguson snatched a late victory over Swansea to depart Old Trafford on a high.

The legendary Red Devils boss, whose habit of earning last-gasp wins coined the phrase ‘Fergie Time’, secured his last ever set of three points at the Theatre of Dreams thanks to Rio Ferdinand’s 87th-minute strike.

Having already wrapped up the Premier League title, Ferguson lifted the famous trophy for a 13th and final time after what also proved his last win in charge of the club – as he was held to a sensational 5-5 draw away at West Brom in his closing outing a week later.

And just under eight years on from that victory over Swansea, we’ve taken a look at Fergie’s final starting XI at Old Trafford and where each player is now.

David De Gea

The Spanish goalkeeper is one of two players from that XI who remain at United today, developing into one of the best goalkeepers on the planet in the eight years which have followed.

However, reports suggest his time at Old Trafford could come to an end this summer, with youngster Dean Henderson in line to replace him as No.1 in between the sticks.

Phil Jones

Jones is the second member of Ferguson’s final winning line-up who still plays for United, yet he has been discarded by current manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The forgotten centre-back has not made a single appearance this season and is highly expected to leave in the summer.

Rio Ferdinand

The former England defender only spent another year at United after Ferguson’s departure, with his form rapidly deteriorating at the age of 35 under successor David Moyes.

After a brief and unsuccessful stint at QPR in the 2014/15 campaign, Ferdinand hung up his boots and now works as a pundit for BT Sport.

Nemanja Vidic

Like his centre-back partner, Vidic only enjoyed one more season as a Red Devils player under Moyes and also struggled to produce his best form.

He left to join Inter Milan in 2014, but after a difficult year-and-a-half spell at the San Siro he too bowed out from the sport.

Moyes’ nightmare season at the helm proved to be a number of United players’ last dance at Old Trafford, as Evra also departed in the summer of 2014.

The France left-back spent time with Juventus, Marseille and West Ham before calling time on his career in 2019. He now makes regular appearances as a pundit on Sky Sports.

    Michael Carrick

Carrick remains at United eight years on from Ferguson’s final win, but the former midfielder has been spending the last two-and-a-half years working as a first-team coach.

After initially joining Jose Mourinho’s backroom staff when he retired in 2018, he now works under the Portuguese’s successor Solskjaer.

    Paul Scholes

The legendary Red Devils midfielder came out of retirement to help Ferguson clinch his 13th and final Premier League title in 2012/13, meaning he hung up his boots for a second time at the end of that season.

Scholes has since endured an unsuccessful one-month spell in charge of Oldham, but now focuses his time on Salford City, the League Two club he co-owns with his fellow United Class of 92 members, and punditry work for BT Sport.

    Shinji Kagawa

Kagawa was one of Ferguson’s final signings at United, repaying his faith by scoring six goals in 26 appearances that season.

He failed to score again for the club under Moyes, nevertheless, and therefore returned to Borussia Dortmund in 2014. After a spell at Real Zaragosa, the Japan star now plays for Greek club PAOK.

    Javier Hernandez

The Mexican striker scored nine goals in 35 games for Moyes in 2013/14, only to be loaned out to Real Madrid by his successor Louis van Gaal in 2014/15.

Chicarito was eventually offloaded to Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, and after brief stints with West Ham and Sevilla he now plies his trade in America with LA Galaxy.

    Danny Welbeck

Welbeck also produced one of his best goalscoring returns for United the following season, netting 10 times in 36 appearances under Moyes, but Van Gaal deemed him surplus to requirements in 2014.

After enjoying five years with rivals Arsenal, the striker spent 13 months at Watford before signing for Brighton, where he still plays today.

    Robin Van Persie

The Dutch frontman almost single-handedly inspired Fergie’s last title, scoring 26 goals in 38 league games after completing a controversial switch from Arsenal.

He failed to replicate that form under Moyes and Van Gaal, however, meaning he was eventually offloaded to Fenerbahce in 2015. After returning to boyhood club Feyenoord two years later, Van Persie retired in 2019 and can now sometimes be found on BT Sport.
