Sir Alex Ferguson opens up on time he was close to Man Utd sack and regrets
Sir Alex Ferguson has opened up on the time Manchester United almost sacked him.
The legendary manager was close to the chop in the 1989/90 season with the Red Devils struggling, including a run of four defeats from five matches.
Ferguson eventually turned it around, winning the FA Cup that season, before guiding the Red Devils to unparalleled success.
Though the Scot has admitted life hasn’t always been easy having retired from management in 2013.
Asked in a Q&A if there was any point that he doubted he’d be able to achieve what he set out to do, Fergie said: “Well, I don’t say doubt.
“I think there were periods when you’re through a spell of not winning games… 1989 in December, we never won a game.
“I was brought up in a working-class background. Giving in and having doubts never surfaced within me.
“I was always positive about where I was going, I would look at all my training notes, my team selections and the next day was always going to be better for me, so the doubts came from other people, not from me.”
Though Ferguson did pinpoint one regret, adding: “There are always going to be regrets, but the thing is always to look forward.
“Tomorrow’s another day. I always did when we lost a game. The next day was better, without question.
“But in terms of the regrets… the 1994 team I had, the back four all seemed to grow old together, and that’s a terrible thing to happen to the manager because these guys were fantastic for me.

“They don’t see it. I see it. The problem for me is ‘what do I do about it?’. I managed to organise a move for them, and they did well out of it, but telling them is very, very difficult.”
