Sir Alex Ferguson may be forced to change view on Newcastle after Saudi takeover

Sir Alex Ferguson’s previous statement about Newcastle being a ‘wee club’ might come back to haunt him following the takeover of the Magpies by the PIF consortium.

In 2012 the former Manchester United manager branded the Toon Army a ‘a wee club in the north-east’, while he stated that they were a haranguer of match officials.

His words came after the Scotsman received backlash for his conduct during the Red Devils 4-3 win over Newcastle.

Ferguson could not believe then-Magpies boss Alan Pardew had the ‘cheek’ to criticise him, given he had pushed an assistant manager over in a win over Tottenham.

Ferguson said during a press conference: “Alan Pardew has come out and criticised me … Alan Pardew is the worst at haranguing referees, his whole staff, every game.

"He was at it the whole game on Wednesday. He shoved the [assistant] referee and makes a joke of it and he's got the cheek to criticise me. It's unbelievable. He forgets the help I gave him.

"The press have had a good field day out of it. They've addressed every possible avenue. The only one they've left out is Barack Obama. He's too busy. I carry that because I'm the manager of the most famous club in the world. I'm not at Newcastle, a wee club in the north-east. That's simply the facts of life."

The words by Ferguson were immortalised while Newcastle fans fumed over what they felt was a huge lack of respect the Glaswegian had shown.

Newcastle were in the midst of Mike Ashley’s tenure when the comments were made – and under his stewardship, the Magpies have offered little more than a single fifth-place finish; for the most part, they have been relegation fodder.

But now, under their new owners who successfully took over the keys last month, they are thought to be the wealthiest football club in the world. The money they possess will surely get them out of mere being relegation candidates year-on-year and they could grow to be a lot more than 'wee.'
