Sir Alex Ferguson called Paul Gascgoine a “fat b******” after deciding against a move to Manchester United.
The Englishman is regarded as one of the best English players of all time, scoring 110 goals as a midfielder and 10 in 57 games for his country.
His career started in hometown Newcastle, working up the academy to score 25 goals in 104 games for the Magpies.
This got the attention of clubs including United – but his final decision to move to Tottenham, where Gazza scored 33 goals, left Sir Alex fuming in a latter.
The 54-year-old has just spoken to Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish when the Red Devils’ legend then rang up.
And the Englishman’s dad John urged him to sign for the “money” in a deal worth £2.2m, with the midfielder set on the transfer.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Gazza said: “I told him I was definitely going to sign.
“Sir Alex said, ‘So I’m going on holiday, when I come back you’ll have signed for Man United, you’ll be at Old Trafford?’
“I told him, ‘Yes, definitely’. I was so excited.”

But when a phone call came from Tottenham, a negotiation followed which saw him clinch a new car and a house for his parents, with his sister also getting a sunbed.
It gave a worrying feeling on signing day, adding: “As I’m driving to Tottenham, I went past Old Trafford and I was actually shaking.
“I thought, ‘He’s going to go off on it with me, Sir Alex Ferguson’. I was petrified.”
And it came true days later when Sir Alex himself got in touch to put some brutal feelings on paper.
“I was getting fan mail by the dozens and I got this big one, it was from Sir Alex Ferguson,” the former midfielder continued.
“He hammered me, ‘You stupid, fat b******’. He told me he had the choice to be manager of Barcelona and Real Madrid – but he chose the biggest club in the world.
