Simon Jordan slams Spurs chairman for calling Harry Kane a 'legend'
‘There have been big games in big times when Harry Kane has been non-visible’: Simon Jordan slams Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy for calling the England captain a ‘legend’… claiming the striker has been ‘a contributing factor’ to their lack of silverware
- Simon Jordan has hit out at Daniel Levy for giving Harry Kane ‘legend’ status
- The former Crystal Palace chairman said the striker was the reason Spurs failed
- The 29-year-old has one year left on his deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Simon Jordan has slammed the ‘legend’ status projected onto Harry Kane by Daniel Levy, and blames the striker for Tottenham’s lack of success in competitions.
Earlier in April, Tottenham chairman Levy declared the England captain’s status as legendary while talking to the Cambridge Union – despite the lack of silverware on a club level – and expressed his hope for a Kane statue outside the stadium one day.
But businessman Jordan, a former chairman of Crystal Palace, accused Levy of ‘talking in soundbites’, and believes the 29-year-old’s performances in a Spurs shirt have contributed to their failure to win trophies.
Jordan told talkSPORT: ‘As a commercial animal who looks at the football club in a certain way, I don’t like banding around terms like “legend”.
‘I’ll let the fans do that or let the media do that. I think when the owner starts doing it you fall into the scenario of trying to please people because Daniel will view Harry Kane in a certain way where he’s there to do a job.’

Simon Jordan told talkSPORT that the label was meaningless due to their lack of silverware
Jordan said Levy’s comments were ‘playing to the gallery’, before adding ‘I wouldn’t be sat there talking about my players as “legends”. I’d be saying they’ve been absolutely fantastic for the football club, I’ve looked after them, they’ve looked after me and long may it continue.’
The businessman continued: ‘I think primarily Kane is part of a team that has been unsuccessful, and he has been a contributing factor to that as well.
‘Because there have been big games in big times when Harry Kane has been non-visible.’
Kane is the record goalscorer for Spurs, but has just one year left on his deal at the club
Kane is Tottenham’s record goalscorer, with 274 goals for the club, and his 207 league goals for Spurs put him on track to rival Alan Shearer’s Premier League record of 260 goals.
But with just one year left on his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, there are persistent rumours that the 29-year-old could leave the club, either to join Manchester United, or to reunite with former boss Mauricio Pochettino who seems close to agreeing a deal to take over London rivals Chelsea.
Tottenham sit in fifth place in the Premier League, but need other teams to falter to qualify for the Champions League, sitting six points behind the current top four.
Their next challenge is a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool, who themselves are fighting to get back into the European picture after a poor season by their standards.
