Shocking scenes in MLS as players kicked and choked with four red cards shown

An MLS match descended in chaos this week as both sides ended the game with nine men following a series of ugly altercations in the closing stages.

Colorado Rapids were beaten 2-1 by Sporting Kansas City, but it was the four red cards that made the headlines as tensions boiled over during what should have been a run-of-the-mill sort of afternoon in the Western Conference.

Rapids defender Auston Trusty was the first man to go, getting himself sent off for a second yellow card after a hard tackle in the first minute of stoppage time, but that was just the start of the madness.

As Rapids pushed for a late equaliser, Kansas star Daniel Salloi cynically blocked a quick free-kick, earning himself a violent shove in the back from Rapids defender Lucas Estevez – who was immediately dismissed.

Though the red card did little to ease tensions as team-mates from both sides piled in to join the scrap – with players spotted kicking and even choking each other in the melee.

Next to go was Kansas defender Andreu Fontas after the Spaniard retaliated by knocking an opponent to the floor and by now there was chaos all over the pitch.

The referee eventually calmed the situation down and managed to restart the action, but found himself pulling the red card out for a fourth time just a couple of minutes later for Salloi – who had kickstarted the fracas – for yet more violent conduct.

Reacting to footage of the madness on social media, one fan tweeted: "This is crazy!! Who says the MLS is boring??"

Another wrote: "It's more physical in MLS than the mickeymouse Bundesliga," while a third said: "What the hell did I just watch? A WWE episode?"
