Sheffield Wednesday hero Barry Bannan responds to ‘honking’ rival’s celebrations

Barry Bannan has fired back at 'honking' Sheffield United star Rhian Brewster after the Championship runner-up recently took aim at rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

It's been a rollercoaster month for the Steel City after both United and Wednesday gained promotion in recent weeks, with the Blades set to return to the Premier League while the Owls are poised for a second-tier comeback. And Brewster couldn't help but include the arch nemeses as he led a chant at United's promotion parade in mid-May.

The east Londoner channelled his inner Jack Wilshere as he appeared on the balcony at Sheffield Town Hall and led a new twist on a familiar sing-along: "What d'ya think of Wednesday? [S***!]. What d'ya think of s***? [Wednesday!] Thank you!"

The chorus took place at a time when Darren Moore's side were still yet to seal their promotion from League One. Wednesday finished third in the division before pulling off one of the most memorable play-off comebacks English football has witnessed en route to beating Barnsley at Wembley.

And club captain Bannan didn't waste his opportunity to get even with his United rival as content emerged from Wednesday's own celebrations this week. Wednesday players broke up a round of 'They're all f***ing w*****s at the Lane" to single out one outspoken star.

"Rhian Brewster," said the Scot from behind a DJ booth as tensions built. "You’re absolutely f***ing honking son!"

The confidence coaxed a mixed reaction from fans, though many commented along the line that United are 'still playing in a division above Bannan'. Many joked about the 'classy' actions of both sets of players, calling for a more refined touch.

More than a few fans poked fun at Wednesday's skipper by jesting former Chelsea and Liverpool prospect Brewster had 'probably never heard of Bannan'. Another highlighted Brewster had score 14 goals in the Championship, one more than Bannan despite playing '20,000 minutes fewer in the league'.

Fans might have hoped for a Steel City derby next term but will likely have to wait at least one more season before the two Sheffield outfits collide again. Wednesday and United haven't been in the same division since the 2018/19 Championship campaign when the Blades once again cut a path to the top flight.

The club managed a remarkable ninth-placed finish under Chris Wilder but were eventually sent packing from the Premier League in 2021, the same year the Owls finished dead last on England's second rung. Bannan and Brewster are almost single-handedly keeping the fire alive despite the void between the two, setting the stage for an almighty reunion when the two clubs eventually find their way back to one another.
