Sheffield Wednesday fans go nuts as club give Bambo Diaby perfect number

Sheffield Wednesday fans have gone wild after the Championship side gave Bambo Diaby the perfect number.

The Owls signed Diaby, 25, from Preston North End on Thursday for an undisclosed fee. The central defender made 17 appearances in the Championship last season as Preston finished 12th.

But fans of newly-promoted Wednesday were more concerned with the number which Diaby was handed for the upcoming season.

“We can confirm our squad numbers for the 2023/24 campaign!” the Owls posted on their official Twitter account, as fans quickly noticed their new Senegalese star had been given the No.5 shirt.

Supporters were delighted as they took the number to be a reference to Lou Bega’s classic hit 'Mambo No.5', with one Twitter user writing: “LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, BAMBO NUMBER FIVE.”

Another tweeted: “Yessss Bambo number 5!!! Also looks like we still want at least another left back and obvs the Milan keeper.”

A third commented: “Very glad to see we've given Bambo no. 5,” before adding: “People under 30 possibly not on board with this reference.”

A fourth wrote: “BAMBO NUMBER 5!!!!,” and a fifth added: “Had to be #5. Well played.”

Diaby first arrived in England in 2019, signing for Barnsley but being hit with a two-year ban by the FA for testing positive for a banned substance. Following his one-and-a-half year spell with Preston, Wednesday manager Xisco Munoz believes the centre-back will provide valuable depth this season.

Munoz said: “Bambo is a big, strong centre-back. He is very quick with the positions in defence. He has a very good mentality, he will always make sacrifices for the good of the group and he will bring a lot of balance to the squad.”
