- Sander Berge could be exiled if he does not leave or sign a new contract
- The Blades hierarchy has told the Norwegian he must make his decision soon
- He joined the Blades for £22m three years ago but could leave for just £12m
Sheffield United have warned Sander Berge that the star midfielder faces a season spent in the stands if he does not leave or sign a new contract.
Berge is expected to finalise a move to fellow newly promoted side Burnley in the coming days for as little as £12million.
Mail Sport understands the Norway international, who joined the Blades for £22m three years ago, was open to remaining at Bramall Lane for their first campaign back in the Premier League.
The 25-year-old has, however, been told by the club’s hierarchy that they plan to make him unavailable for selection if he stays and does not commit his future. Berge’s current contract runs out next summer.
Burnley remain in negotiations for Berge, while looking at a similar deal for Aston Villa’s Aaron Ramsey – brother of England Under-21 Euros winner Jacob.
Berge registered six goals and five assists in Sheffield United’s promotion-winning season
Berge has featured in the Blades’ pre-season games against Derby County and Stuttgart
The latest developments at Sheffield United represent yet more chaos a matter of days before their league season kicks off against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
It serves as yet another headache for manager Paul Heckingbottom – who worked under a transfer embargo last season – after he saw Iliman Ndiaye sold to Marseille for around £20m.
United have made four understated signings so far this summer, totalling just over £10m.
The newcomers have routinely missed out on top targets and are hoping to secure loans to bolter a squad in desperate need of new blood.
United are waiting to hear on Manchester City’s plans for youngsters James McAtee and Cole Palmer, with Premier League clubs able to loan one player from a divisional rival.
The thinning nature of Heckingbottom’s squad means there are likely to be a raft of teenagers on the bench for this weekend’s opener.
