Shaw’s interview “much worse” than Lukaku in Man Utd vs Chelsea comparison

Gus Poyet has claimed that controversial interview that rocked Romelu Lukaku’s relationship with Chelsea wasn’t as bad as Luke Shaw’s following Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Wolves.

The Blues striker provided an exclusive discussion with Sky Italia last year in which he expressed his love for Inter Milan, his former club, and his dissatisfaction with Chelsea’s current system.

Lukaku and Thomas Tuchel have since had clear-the-air talks and the striker, 28, featured in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semifinal first-leg on Thursday night, after having been pulled out the squad for their previous game, a 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

And former Blues and Spurs midfielder Poyet said that the supposed incendiary interview was not as bad as the one Shaw gave post-match following United’s home defeat to Wolves.

“The funny part of it is that three days ago it was looking terrible,” Poyet said via Amazon Prime after the game at Stamford Bridge.

“ It was a nightmare for everyone involved. Lukaku wasn’t even in the squad against Liverpool. Two days later everything is sorted, nothing happened and it was not that bad. I think it was the language that didn’t help Lukaku. It was in Italian. He was trying to be nice with the Inter fans. It went a little too far, trying to explain that disappointment.

“On the other hand, it was made a little bigger. I mean you can compare it with Luke Shaw after the game the other day. Luke Shaw’s words were much worse about how they were playing than what Lukaku said.

“On one side it created a massive problem and on the other nothing happened with Luke Shaw. It depends on how you take these words."

Shaw had bemoaned the lack of guile from his teammates during the contest against the Midlands club.

The 26-year-old told Sky Sports after the game: "It's tough, I think you look at our squad, you look at our team, the players we have.

"We have unbelievable quality. Sometimes quality isn't enough, we need to bring intensity, bring more aggression, we need more motivation.

"From the outside today it didn't look like we had any of them three, but inside the dressing room, we know what we want.

"I think when we step out we need to give 100 per cent. I'm not saying not everyone did, but to win these types of games, we all need to be 100 per cent committed. Like I said it is just tough and disappointing.

"We have time now to refocus, we've got a long training week and maybe the manager can bring some more ideas for what he wants on the pitch."
