It's well known that for young footballers, success on the field also means a great deal of temptation off of it.

You break onto the scene and all of a sudden you're driving a supercar, attending exclusive nightclubs and are turning the heads of glamour models.

But few took it to more of an extreme than Antonio Cassano, the hot-headed Italian who said he slept with between 600 and 700 women.

Finally, the ex-Roma and Real Madrid forward settled down.

So who was she? And how did she tame the maverick who said he "played a great game" after having sex?

Ahead of Italy's Euro 2020 clash with Wales on Saturday, Daily Star Sport looks into just how Cassano called time on his Playboy exploits…

The fiery Italian became engaged to water polo star, Carolina Marcialis, in 2008 before tying the knot in 2010.

On Instagram, she is also a fitness-mad influencer with 131,000 followers.

Forever in the gym or swimming pool, Carolina is regularly sharing workouts and poolside selfies of her immaculately athletic physique.

Little is reported on how Cassano met Marcialis, especially given the wild gluttony that proceeded their engagement.

Cassano was supposed to be Italy's next big thing, and a hype surrounded him similar to the one that followed Wayne Rooney after an incredible Euro 2004 tournament.

That hype was so big that in 2001, Roma forked out £26million for Cassano at the age of 19 to make him the world's most expensive teenager.

He got off to a good start, but it quickly became apparently that Cassano had a temper and an insatiable lust for women.

Bitter fallouts became the norm and he moved to Real Madrid in 2006, where his extreme appetite for romping appeared to spiral out of control.

A passage from his book sheds light on just how far he took his sex obsession.

It reads: “In Madrid I had a friend who was a hotel waiter. His job was to bring me three or four pastries after I had sex.

"He would bring the pastries up the stairs, I would escort the woman to him and we would make an exchange.

"He would take the girl and I would take the pastries. Sex and then food, a perfect night.”

He tied the knot in the same year he joined AC Milan, and it appeared he had finally put his exploits behind him.

Judging by the Instagram profile of Marcialis, it appears she marks a contrast to the lifestyle he once lived.

Cassano said among the 700 women he bedded were around 20 celebrities.

But Marcialis represents little of the sort, instead leading a fairly low-profile life and leading a fine career in sport.

Cassano hung up his boots in 2018 after one of the most hedonistic careers in the history of the sport.

He wrote in his book: "The day has come, the day when you decide it really is over," said Cassano, who played for major European clubs including Real Madrid, Roma and both Milan teams.

"Over the last few days of training, I realised that I no longer have the mentality to train consistently. In order to play football, you need passion and talent, but above all determination and at this moment I have other priorities.

"If I'd had another head on my shoulders, I could've been playing on Mars. I'd be like Lionel Messi, Neymar and few others."
