Sergio Rico to leave hospital after life-threatening fall and could play again

PSG goalkeeper Sergio Rico is set to leave hospital months after sustaining a life-threatening injury when he fell from a horse in May.

The 29-year-old was hit by a mule cart and a runaway horse while on a pilgrimage in Spain. The Spaniard was placed in a medically-induced coma after the accident, which saw him come within "half a centimetre of death," according to reports in France.

The incident left Rico fighting for his life in hospital. He came out of his medically-induced coma three weeks after the accident, and he now looks set to leave hospital altogether.

According to The Athletic, Rico's family now expects him to leave the hospital this week and return to his home in Seville. Rico had been due to leave last month, but his departure was delayed.

Rico is focussed on a return to football but doctors have been positive throughout the process.

PSG players supported Rico in his hour of need during their final Ligue 1 match of the season against Clermont Foot. His current side wore warm up shirts with his image and name on the back.

Sevilla, who Rico also turned out for, wore shirts with the message “come on Sergio, we are with you” ahead of their Europa League final victory over Roma.

Rico’s family released a statement after the accident itself, which read: "Sergio Rico travelled last night from Strasbourg to Malaga and there to El Rocio, with the permission of the club after PSG won Ligue 1.

"After just over an hour and a half with his family and friends, he was on his way to the Pontifical Mass next to the chapel when he suffered an accident when a mule cart and a runaway horse hit him.

"We are grateful for the expressions of affection, the messages and the interest of all those of you who are asking about the condition of the patient."
