Sergio Ramos 'will be included in Spain's provisional 55-man squad'

Sergio Ramos is ‘set to be included in Luis Enrique’s provisional 55-man squad for the Qatar World Cup’ despite not featuring since MARCH 2021… with doubts hanging over the prospects of Barcelona’s Ansu Fati

  • Sergio Ramos, 36, could make return for Spain for the first time in 19 months
  • The former captain is reportedly on Luis Enrique’s 55-man World Cup long list
  • Nico Williams, Borja Iglesias and Alejandro Baldea are also set to be included

PSG defender Sergio Ramos could be in with an outside chance to feature at the Qatar World Cup, after reports from Spain suggested he was in line for a place in Luis Enrique’s provisional squad of 55.

The former Spain captain is set to be offered a chance to show the ex-Barca manager that he still has what it takes to compete on the international stage, according to Spanish outlet Diario AS.

Ramos has not featured since March 2021, but is his country’s all-time record appearance maker with 180 games for La Roja.

The provisional squad is set to be outlined on Friday, October 28, with reports suggesting the 36-year-old will be a surprise inclusion.

Where once Ramos was arguably the most important player for the national team, he has fallen further and further down the pecking order.

And his presence has hardly been missed with the emergence of Pau Torres as one of his nation’s strongest defenders, alongside Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte.

The former captain was part of his nation’s golden era that won the World Cup in 2010

Enrique is set to name a 55-man long list before whittling it down to 26 by November 11

But while Ramos could make a sensational return to the international set-up, Ansu Fati could miss out.

Ramos has not featured for Spain since joining PSG in Summer 2021

Fati, 19, emerged two seasons ago as the latest in a line of ‘new Messis’ to come out of Barcelona, but proved to be a mercurial talent, having racked up an impressive 22 goals and nine assists in 74 appearances for the club.

Other players thought to be in line for a place on the long list are Borja Iglesias, Barca youngster Alejandro Balde and Nico Williams.

Williams, 20, has been one of the surprise packages in LaLiga this season and has been key to Athletic Bilbao’s unlikely bid for Champions League football next season.

The forward, who’s brother Inaki will be representing Ghana in Qatar, was first capped for Spain in the last international break but is in with a good chance of making at least the provisional squad.

The report also indicated that Enrique’s 55-man list will not be made available to the public as he keeps his World Cup preparations close to his chest.

With the tournament set to kick off on November 20, Spain’s final 26-player list will have to be finalised by November 11, meaning Enrique will have just two weeks to cut some 29 names.

However Ansu Fati is set to miss out on a call up to the side when the list is announced
