Sergio Ramos insists he can keep playing until 40 as exit talks mount

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos insists he can continue playing at the top level for FIVE more years until he is 40… with soon-to-be out of contract star insisting he has ‘left his soul’ to the Bernabeu club despite links to PSG and Manchester United

  • Sergio Ramos has insisted he has plenty of elite level football left in him
  • The Spanish defender will turn 30-years-old at the end of the month
  • Ramos’ contract with Madrid is up at the end of the season and talks have stalled
  • The veteran has been linked with both PSG and Manchester United

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos insists he is of the full belief that he can continue playing at the highest level for the next five years.

Ramos is set to turn 35 at the end of the month but, with uncertainty now looming over his Madrid career, the bullish defender has backed himself to remain at the pinnacle of European football.

Speculation is now mounting that Ramos could finally leave Madrid with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, and the man himself has this week admitted that he is still unsure what the immediate future holds.

Speaking to Spanish publication Marca, Ramos outlined his belief that he is good enough to continue winning trophies and insisted his ‘soul’ has been given to Madrid.

‘I wish I could say something, but everything remains the same,’ Ramos explained.

‘All I’m thinking about is coming back and finishing the season in the best possible way. There’s no news of my renewal, I wish I could [say something].

‘I’m calm and I’m only thinking about playing again and winning a trophy.’

Ramos told Marca he is only thinking of winning more trophies, with pressure now on Madrid

The veteran is a driving force for Madrid and is expecting the club to offer him a new deal

Ramos’ words are in some quarters believed to be an attempt to pressure Madrid into handing him a lucrative new deal, despite his aging years.

‘You can’t please everyone, but there’s one thing you can’t erase: everything you’ve won,’ Ramos added.

‘The only thing that worries me is that they know that I’m a real guy, that I left my soul for the Madrid badge.

‘I’ve always stood up for myself and I’ve always told the truth. I’m honest, humble and hard working. It is on the basis of performance that the player should be judged.

‘I can play five more years at the highest level. If injuries are not too bad, my mentality will help me.’

Speculation has continued to mount regarding Ramos’ future, after the player himself made it clear he has no intention of seeing out the final years of his football in the lower standard leagues of Asia or mainland America.

Ramos has outlined to Madrid that he is prepared to walk away if he does not get the deal he wants, and is said to be preferring a move to Manchester United over a possible switch to PSG.

Ramos has been offered a new Madrid deal on the same terms, but is holding out for a payrise and is said to be strongly considering the option of joining Manchester United

In the Spanish capital Ramos has been offered a two-year contract on the same £10.8m-per-year net deal that he is on now.

He is currently exercising his right to pass on the first offer on the basis that, with the 10 per cent pay cut the players have agreed to take during the pandemic, accepting the same money means, in effect, earning less.

The defender has won 18 trophies during his 15-and-a-half year spell with the LaLiga side.

Ramos was pivotal in Real’s title win last season scoring six goals in the club’s last 11 games as they overtook Barcelona.

Real have only managed to win three of the six league games the centre back has missed this season with the defender contributing three goals in all competitions.
