Sergio Ramos forced to wait for Paris Saint-Germain debut after picking up a calf injury – with the veteran defender, 35, yet to appear in PSG colours after his free transfer from Real Madrid

Sergio Ramos will be forced to wait for the chance to make his Paris Saint-Germain debut after picking up a calf injury.

The French giants announced that the knock will keep him out of their pre-season friendly against Sevilla on Tuesday 27.

Veteran defender Ramos had hoped to return for the match against the first club of his career, but faces a delay to appear for the first time in his new side’s colours after signing from Real Madrid on a free this summer.

Ramos had hoped to appear in PSG colours for the first time against his first club, Sevilla

A statement on PSG’s official website read: ‘Sergio Ramos is gradually recovering from a solar lesion in the left calf suffered during training at the end of last week.

‘His return to training is expected in a week.’

The centre back spent 16 trophy-laden years with Los Blancos, with an astonishing 101 goals in 671 games in all competitions, but left the club after failing to agree a new contract.

Initially he wanted a new two-year deal, with Madrid only willing to offer him a one-year extension on reduced terms, but the 35-year-old later revealed he wanted to accept the offer but it had since expired, leaving him as a free agent.

But the French giant’s manager Mauricio Pochettino is keen to nurse Ramos back to full fitness

PSG then quickly swooped to secure Ramos – the joint-fourth most capped international player of all time, with 180 caps and counting for Spain – on a two-year contract, giving him his favoured No 4 shirt.

Ramos will add pedigree, game understanding and a winning mentality to a PSG side who lost Thiago Silva to Chelsea last summer and whose centre backs – Marquinhos, Presnel Kimpembe, Thilo Kehrer and Abdou Diallo – are all 27 or younger.

However, he struggled with several injuries last season, only making 21 appearances in all competitions across the entire campaign and only seven in the year of 2021, with PSG keen to nurse him carefully back to full fitness.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will face Ligue 1 winners Lille in the Trophee des Champions on Sunday with a trophy on the line, before they begin their domestic season against Troyes on Saturday August 7.
