Premier League legend Sergio Aguero announced that he was retiring from professional football on Wednesday. The Argentine had no intention of wrapping up his career at the age of 33, but a heart condition meant that he had to hang up his boots prematurely.

Aguero’s greatest footballing legacy is from his 10-year spell at Manchester City, as he asserted himself as one of the best strikers to ever grace the English top-flight.

The forward scored 184 goals in 275 appearances for the Cityzens which cements him in the fourth spot for most goals in Premier League history, only behind Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney and Andrew Cole.

The former Atletico Madrid man then emotionally left the Etihad Stadium outfit earlier this year to join Barcelona. However, his time at Camp Nou was short-lived.

He made just four appearances for Barca, scoring once before an incident on the 30th of October put an early end to the forwards unbelievable career.

Whilst representing Barca against Alaves, Aguero dropped suffering from chest pains and dizziness.

The forward then had to undergo a procedure where a small tube, called a catheter, was moved through his heart via a blood vessel so that heat/cold could be used to eliminate the irregular heartbeat.

Speaking about the procedure, the City icon’s cardiologist Roberto Peidro, who has treated the Argentina international since 2004, told Argentine radio shows: “He has a very small scar in his heart area which is less than a millimetre which is why it sort of short-circuits and causes those arrhythmias.

“What was done using a catheter was to burn that area where the arrhythmias were coming out.

“We think it’s going to work very well and solve the problem but our advice is that he shouldn’t do high-performance sport that involves an important degree of mental and physical stress several hours a day.

“He can do sport and he’s going to have a normal life like any normal person. But footballers live a different type of life.”

Peidro then rubbished rumours that the heart issues were a consequence of Covid or the vaccine, insisting that the issues were most probably caused by a virus previously.

”The most common scenario is that the small scar found is produced by a virus he’s suffered at some point in his life and wasn’t ever detected.

“It was a shared decision for him to quit professional football. We thought it best he stop playing professional football and it’s probably the wisest decision.

“He could probably carry on playing and the arrhythmias might never occur again, but we can’t be sure. In the face of the slightest doubt, we said we would rest easier if he quit and he saw it like that as well.”

Aguero’s football career will be fondly remembered by fans of all the clubs that ever watched him play, and neutrals who admired his masterful ways in the final third.

The striker is sure to have many different options of career paths he can venture into now, may that be in punditry, coaching or even management.
