Sergio Aguero will leave Manchester City at the end of his contract this summer. Aguero will depart the Etihad as the club’s leading goalscorer of all time. The Argentina international has scored 257 goals in 384 appearances since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
Aguero scored the infamous goal to lead City to their first Premier League title in 2012, netting a stoppage-time winner in a dramatic victory over QPR.
The 32-year-old has won 10 major honours, including four league titles, and is set to add to that tally before he leaves the club.
City are running away with the Premier League and are also vying to win all three cup competitions.
Following the news, Aguero posted a message on his social media.
He paid tribute to the City fans and says they will always have a place in his heart.
“When a cycle comes to an end, many sensations arise,” Aguero wrote.
“A huge sense of satisfaction and pride remains in me for having played with Manchester City for a whole ten seasons – unusual for a professional player this day and age.
“Ten seasons with major achievements, throughout which I was able to become the top historic goalscorer and forging an indestructible bond with all those who love this club – people who will always be in my heart.”
Aguero has struggled with injury problems this season, starting just four Premier League matches.
He has been linked with a free transfer to La Liga giants Barcelona and French side Paris Saint-Germain.
On his departure, City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said: “Sergio’s contribution to Manchester City over the last 10 years cannot be overstated.
“His legend will be indelibly etched into the memories of everyone who loves the Club and maybe even in those who simply love football.
“This is not yet the moment for farewell words and speeches. There is still much to achieve in the remainder of the time we have with Sergio, and we look forward to his contributions to the challenges which lay ahead.”
The City chief also confirmed there will be a statue of Aguero at the Etihad, alongside one of his former team-mates David Silva and Vincent Kompany.
He added: “In the meantime, it gives me great pleasure to announce that we will be commissioning an artist to create a statue of Sergio to live at the Etihad Stadium alongside the ones under construction for Vincent and David.
“And we look forward to the opportunity to bid Sergio a fitting farewell at the end of the season.”
