Sergei Rebrov returning to Ukraine to fight war against Russia
Former West Ham attacker Sergei Rebrov has claimed he will go back to his home country of Ukraine and fight in the war.
The Al-Ain boss, who from 2000-2004 played for Tottenham before joining West Ham, has enjoyed great success with the Emirati club since joining in June, guiding the side to the top of the UAE Pro League while he also achieved a League Cup runners-up position with them.
The 47-year-old – who previously managed Dynamo Kyiv from 2014-2017 – said he will head back to Ukraine through following the invasion of Russia.
He told the Independent: “I have a job here but as soon as my season is over, I will be back home, with my people. As soon as I can, I will go.
“Of course, we are not even thinking about football now, we are thinking about protecting our country. I am very proud of the people, the soldiers who are trying to save our country. We are on the right side, but we have to fight for our freedom.”
Rebrov scored ten Premier League goals across two campaigns for Spurs and made a decent 75 appearances for Ukraine internationally.
The former striker admitted that he would even be willing to take up arms if it meant protecting his country from Russian aggression.

“Of course, I will take a gun in my hand. We will survive. We will win. I see no compromise as there is no compromise with [Vladimir] Putin, he only wants to go to Kyiv and show he has occupied our country.
“He has no interest in compromise, we will fight for our people and stay to the end. We are now fighting for our country, we want to decide our fate, not have other people run our country or tell us what to do in the future.”
President Putin called on his troops to invade Ukraine following an escalation to the war that broke officially in 2014.
